Unfortunately, this type of story is more common that we realize. The summer in which I was first in the rehab hospital, there were two other people there who'd broken their necks in diving accidents. Sine then, I've met almost a dozen others who've been injured in the same way. I'm sorry to hear about your son. But I hope he and your family have gotten through it as well as my family and I did.
