One of the things we were told in the rehab hospital is that many people lack experience with disability, and that it was our job to be ambassadors as it were to help people learn and become more accepting were they willing.

I’m sorry to hear about your brother in law. He sounds needlessly problematic. Some people are just like that, regardless of their physical capabilities.
